White House Has an Organic Vegetable Garden

Michelle Obama has told Oprah Winfrey's "O" Magazine that her purpose for planting the new organic garden is to promote good nutritional habits in her own children, while also bringing attention to nutrition among children across the nation. Mrs. Obama was told by her pediatrician that it is important for her to think about changing her normal tendency to eat out three times per week in order to foster a more nutritious diet in her children. According to the doctor, her children had put on too much weight due to the poor eating habits.
So a plan was formulated and implemented in March to plant an organic vegetable garden that would provide home grown produce for the White House Kitchen. Normally the job of maintaining the White House grounds falls under the administration and care of the National Park Service Staff. But not this time. A group of elementary students from a local school had the chore of digging up the soil in preparation for the 1,100-square-foot garden. White House executive chef, Cristeta Comerford, said that she was looking forward to planning menus around the healthy vegetables from the new organic garden.
Hopefully, the Obamas are not the only family that is preparing to eat more healthily from their own organic garden. You may want to begin your own organic garden just like the one at the White House. But it is a good idea to get started very soon. There is a lot of planning and preparation that goes into getting your first crop of organic vegetables from your own garden.
